Sometimes you just need salt air, fresh seafood, and a reason to leave town for a couple of days.
This past weekend I headed down to Corpus Christi — just about three hours from Houston — and it reminded me why it’s such an easy, underrated getaway.
Barefoot Mardi Gras on Padre Island
We were there for Barefoot Mardi Gras on Padre Island and let me tell you… this event is growing. Locals shared that this year was the most attended yet, and you could feel the energy. It’s festive, colorful, laid-back, and completely coastal — think Mardi Gras vibes, but with sand between your toes.
It’s exactly the kind of event that makes a weekend trip feel special without needing flights or complicated planning.
And that’s one of the things I love about Corpus — there’s almost always something happening. Festivals, beach events, live music, cultural celebrations. If you’re thinking about going, definitely check the events calendar first. You might accidentally plan your trip around something fun.
Fresh Seafood (Because obviously)
When you’re on the coast, seafood isn’t optional.
We stopped at Black Diamond Oyster Bar for oysters and shrimp, and it absolutely delivered. Fresh, simple, no frills — just exactly what you want when you’ve been in the sun and salt air all day.
There’s something about eating seafood near the water that just tastes better.

So Much More Than Just a Beach Town
A lot of people think Corpus Christi is just “a beach trip,” but there’s quite a bit to fill a long weekend.
You’ve got:
- Texas State Aquarium – One of the top aquariums in the state and a great stop whether you’re traveling with kids or not.
- USS Lexington – A WWII aircraft carrier turned museum. It’s massive and surprisingly immersive.
- Selena Museum – A must-visit for fans of Selena and Texas music history.
- Texas Surf Museum – A quirky, fun stop that highlights Texas surf culture.
You can easily mix beach time with culture, history, and a little nostalgia.
The Real Showstopper: Padre Island National Seashore
If you want wide-open space and natural beauty, head to Padre Island National Seashore.
It’s a 70-mile stretch of protected white sand beaches, dunes, and coastal prairie. Seventy miles. That kind of space is rare. It feels peaceful, expansive, and a little wild in the best way.
You can walk for miles, watch birds, fish, or simply sit and listen to the waves without the heavy commercial development you find in other beach destinations.
It’s the kind of place where you actually slow down.
Why Corpus Christi Works So Well for a Weekend
Here’s the real beauty of it:
- No airport lines
- No long travel days
- No complicated logistics
- Just pack up and go
For Houston-area families, couples, or even a quick girls’ trip, it checks so many boxes. You can make it as relaxed or as activity filled as you want. Plan around an event like Barefoot Mardi Gras or go purely for beach time and seafood.
Either way, it feels like a getaway — without the stress of a big trip.
And sometimes, that’s exactly what you need.
